Pericardial Cyst: Unexpected Finding on a Chest Radiograph

چکیده
A 32-year-old female presented to the emergency department after a motor vehicle collision with complaints of thoracic back pain. Further history was not obtainable owing to marked ethanol intoxication. Vital signs and physical examination were unremarkable except for a mild tachycardia, which resolved with intravenous fluids. A chest radiograph was obtained (Figure 1). Medical records’ review revealed that the same abnormality had been noted 17 months earlier (Figure 2). DIAGNOSIS Most pericardial cysts are congenital, forming during embryogenesis from a persistent parietal recess. They are uncommon, with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 100,000 population. Approximately 1 in 6 patients are symptomatic with complaints of chest pain or dyspnea. Pericardial cysts may cause cardiac compression and may enlarge over time. They are easily seen on routine chest radiographs and may be an incidental finding as in our case. Diagnosis is confirmed

Pericardial coelomic cysts are uncommon tumors that are usually detected on a routine roentgenogram of the chest in an asymptomatic individual. Findings from physical examination are usually unremarkable. Needle aspiration, after echocardiographic finding of a cyst, may be diagnostic and therapeutic. Surgery may be indicated to exclude neoplasm or vascular abnormality. This case report presents...

movement of the septum transversum after cyst formation. On the other hand, Maier6 regarded pericardial cysts as a congenital structure, but felt that diverticulae resulted from gradual stretching of a herniated portion of pericardium through a weakened fibrous layer in many cases. He suggested that congenital factors may play a predisposing role by providing a weak area of pericardium, but per...
متن کاملEnlarging, atypically located pericardial cyst. Recent experience and literature review.
Pericardial cysts frequently are recognized when they present in a cardiophrenic angle, but may not be suspected when they occur elsewhere in the chest. To highlight the unusual presentations of pericardial cysts, we present two patients with cysts in the upper mediastinum and review the reported experience with similar lesions. Our patients' cysts are particularly instructive because one cyst ...
متن کاملExcision of a recurrent pericardial cyst using video-assisted thoracic surgery.
A recurrent pericardial cyst manifested as an enlarging cardiophrenic cyst and was reexcised with the aid of video-assisted thoracic surgery. Video-assisted thoracic surgical excision can be a safe and effective approach, but complete excision should be performed to avoid recurrence.
